THE ROLE OF EMOTION REGULATION AND SOCIAL COHESION IN SHAPING STUDENTS’ PATRIOTIC AWARENESS
Downloads
Objective: Patriotic awareness is a key affective and social outcome of civic education, yet its psychological antecedents among students remain insufficiently examined. This study examined the role of emotion regulation and social cohesion in shaping students’ patriotic awareness. Method: A quantitative correlational design was employed, involving [N = 320] secondary-school students selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, a Social Cohesion Scale, and a Patriotic Awareness Scale, and were analysed using Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression. Results: The results indicated that both emotion regulation (r = [.42], p < .01) and social cohesion (r = [.51], p < .01) were significantly and positively related to patriotic awareness, and together accounted for [34%] of its variance. Social cohesion emerged as the stronger predictor. Novelty: The findings suggest that fostering adaptive emotion regulation strategies and a cohesive school climate may strengthen students’ patriotic awareness. The study is limited by its cross-sectional, self-report design, and future research should adopt longitudinal and multi-method approaches.
